Large IARC contingent to present at IPVC 2024 and host session on cervical cancer screening

Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will attend the 36th International Papillomavirus Conference (IPVC) in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on 12–15 November 2024, and will host a session on the introduction of screening programmes for cervical cancer. IPVC is one of the largest global conferences focused on cervical cancer prevention.

Many scientists from IARC will be in attendance to present different projects that IARC is leading or is involved in with the goal of advancing the elimination of cervical cancer. Dr Partha Basu, Head of the Early Detection, Prevention, and Infections Branch at IARC, will chair the IARC session, titled “Rolling out HPV detection based cervical screening – progress & challenges in selected Asian National Cancer Centers Alliance (ANCCA) countries”. This session, which will include participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, China, India, Malaysia, and Thailand, will take place on 14 November at 11:05–12:35 GMT.

Dr Basu will also present a recorded talk during a session titled “State of the science of single-dose prophylactic HPV vaccination: a summary of a Monograph published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute”. This objective of this session is to present and discuss content related to a peer-reviewed special issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Monographs on studies related to single-dose HPV vaccination, which was published to coincide with IPVC 2024. The session is pre-recorded and will be available to view on the IPVC website.

Other scientists from IARC will present during different sessions on topics including best practices in cervical screening programmes, strategies to increase cervical cancer screening participation in vulnerable populations, offering independent guidance on screening and care to health-care providers, and managing cervical precancer in women living with HIV.
