Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), planted a tree in the central garden of the new IARC headquarters, the Nouveau Centre building, during a ceremony on 2 February 2022 to mark World Cancer Day, which is observed on 4 February every year.
The ceremony was organized by Demathieu Bard Batîment Sud-Est, the company responsible for the construction of the building. It was attended by Dr Weiderpass on behalf of IARC, as well as Mr Bruno Bernard, president of the Métropole de Lyon; Ms Celine de Laurens, deputy in charge of health, prevention, and environmental health for the Mairie de Lyon; Mr Christophe Gourjon, Regional Councillor, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region; and other stakeholders in the project.
Construction of the Nouveau Centre building has been supported by some of IARC’s Participating States, most notably by the French government, and by local government authorities in Lyon and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region. IARC launched its first crowdfunding campaign to finance the purchase and installation of equipment for its new headquarters. Supporters who donate €50 or more will be able to have their name, or that of a loved one, inscribed on the glass walls of the Nouveau Centre building in recognition of their contribution. IARC can also accept in-kind donations such as equipment, furnishings, or services.
The Nouveau Centre building is located in the Biodistrict of Gerland in Lyon, France, and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2022.
