IARC Director Dr Elisabete Weiderpass attended a symposium on “Building up biosample-based prospective cohorts in India” on 22–23 March 2019 in Mumbai.
While in Mumbai, Dr Weiderpass met with leaders in cancer research, such as Dr Rajendra Badwe, Director of the Tata Memorial Centre, and Dr Rajesh Dikshit, Director of the Centre for Cancer Epidemiology.
Dr Weiderpass also inaugurated the Biobank for Research and Treatment Innovation at the Centre for Cancer Epidemiology of the Tata Memorial Centre, alongside Sir Rory Collins, Chief Executive Officer of the UK Biobank and Head of the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford.
During the same trip, Dr Weiderpass also visited the Serum Institute of India in Pune, and discussed the IARC-coordinated trials in Pune with Dr Rengaswamy Sankaranarayanan, IARC Senior Visiting Scientist, and Dr Partha Basu, Head of the IARC Screening Group.
