Dr Michael Olanipekun and Dr Marie-Laure Aix describe the burden of pancreatic cancer and some of the research being conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in a new video to mark the close of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death. Although it is only the 12th most common cancer type globally, with more than 500 000 people estimated to have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2022, it is the sixth most common cause of cancer death, leading to almost 470 000 deaths in 2022.
In the video, Dr Olanipekun and Dr Aix present the scale of the burden of pancreatic cancer, some of the known risk factors, and how IARC researchers and partners are working to discover more about the causes of this cancer, one of the cancers with the least favourable prognosis.
