New IARC-GICR Collaborating Centre established in Kenya to improve cancer registration in sub Saharan Africa through training

Within the framework of the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is pleased to announce that the Nairobi Population-Based Cancer Registry has become an IARC GICR Collaborating Centre for training in cancer registration in sub-Saharan Africa.

The official inauguration took place in Nairobi, Kenya, on 17 November in the presence of key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Health of Kenya, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, and international partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN), and Vital Strategies.

The IARC GICR Collaborating Centre in Nairobi will focus on training to build capacity in cancer registration and will benefit from the registry’s long-standing expertise in cancer registration and KEMRI’s dedicated facilities and expertise in education. The new Collaborating Centre will focus on providing support for regional training courses and the implementation and development of the CanReg5 software. CanReg5 is used by all AFCRN members to input, store, check, and analyse population-based cancer registry data.

IARC has partnered with the AFCRN from the inception of the GICR to provide a network Regional Hub for Cancer Registration in Sub-Saharan Africa, one of six IARC Regional Hubs, which cover transitioning regions worldwide and 85% of the global population.
