IARC marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2024: building regional capacity

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is marking Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2024 by offering insights into its activities and research designed to help control childhood cancer.

IARC, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (in Memphis, Tennessee, USA), and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) have organized an online course on the registration of cancer in children as part of the collaborative programme Targeting Childhood Cancer through the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (ChildGICR). The course will take place every Tuesday over 6 weeks, starting on 8 October 2024.

For the course, 40 participants from 9 target countries in the Caribbean region involved in cancer surveillance were selected to learn about the fundamentals of childhood cancer registration, the burden of childhood cancer, data quality control, tumour classification and staging, and data analysis and use.

This capacity-building activity in geographical areas where data on childhood cancer are sparse will support the production of data in the long term. Registry data are required to demonstrate progress in tackling the childhood cancer burden worldwide and support the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.
